The Perils of Love: Art Song from Scarlatti to Ravel

Karina Gauvin, star of the opera world, is regularly featured on major international stages from Paris to Milan to Tokyo. In this program, Karina presents an intimate selection of art songs for soprano and piano, in which poetry is set to music in the most profound and intricate way. Unlike operatic arias, these songs are meant for smaller, more personal settings, with an intense focus on the poetry's meaning and its musical expression. A close partnership between the voice and the piano is essential, and pianist Michael McMahon fills this role as Karina’s ideal duo partner.

The songs of this program span from the early Baroque period through to Mozart, continuing with the tragic undertones of Gustav Mahler and a selection of masterfully crafted French “mélodies” by Bizet, Ravel, and Massenet. Themes of love, loss, passion, life’s struggles, and the quiet joys of nature are heard throughout.

Tickets are $70 for Level 1, $65 for Level 2, and $25 for students. Prices are inclusive of fees and taxes. Seating is assigned.

Single tickets go on sale on August 15, 2026.

Light and Shades

Trio Hélios, one of France's most exciting new-generation piano trios, makes its North American debut with a program spanning music from the First and Second World Wars.

Maurice Ravel’s Piano Trio in A minor was written in 1914 with intense fervour and urgency on his part - the First World War was looming. In describing his feelings while writing the piece, he says: “I have never worked with more insane, more heroic intensity,” and “I am working on the Trio with the sureness and lucidity of a madman.” Ravel’s work paid off: the result was a true masterpiece. The opening Modéré draws on Basque folk dance rhythms, while the scherzo, Pantoum, combines mischievous, romantic, and expressive themes in a shower of sparks. A solemn Passacaille follows, rooted in a dance form from the Spanish Renaissance, before the Finale returns to Basque dance rhythms, bringing the work to a grand, symphonic close.

A contemporary of Ravel, Lili Boulanger’s D’un soir triste and D’un matin de printemps were the two final works of her short life. These complementary pieces show, on one hand, her restrained and poignant side, and on the other, a vibrant boldness and dancing freshness.

Dmitri Shostakovich’s Second Piano Trio emerges from tragedy and loss resulting from the Second World War: mourning his friend Ivan Sollertinsky and other war victims, the work carries both personal grief and the dark shadows of history. The finale notably draws upon a Jewish folk theme, its spectral dance tinged with irony and defiance – music that Shostakovich would echo once more in his Eighth String Quartet, dedicated “to the victims of war and fascism.”

Tickets are $70 for Level 1, $65 for Level 2, and $25 for students. Prices are inclusive of fees and taxes. Seating is assigned.

Single tickets go on sale on August 15, 2026.

Seasons of Renewal

2025 Grand Prize Winner of the Banff International String Quartet Competition, the Poiesis Quartet brings a remarkable diversity of styles to the stage. With this program, they show equal mastery of the driving rhythms of Prokofiev, the poetry of late Beethoven, and the transformative musical landscape of Canadian composer Kevin Lau.

Prokofiev's first String Quartet opens the program, influenced by Beethoven and showcasing fierce bursts of determination along with introspective, searching melodies. The Poiesis Quartet then brings to life one of their most meaningful commissions, Canadian composer Kevin Lau’s String Quartet No. 7 entitled “Surfacing”, featured in their grand-prize-winning performance in Banff. The piece was inspired by a familial trauma, when the composer’s newborn son was diagnosed with a rare liver disease; navigating the parallel processes of recovery and growth, it surfaces from the depths of strife and hardship with a renewed exuberance. To follow, “Many Many Cadences” by American composer Sky Macklay “stretches the listeners’ perception of cadences", keeping us on the edge of our seats. Finally, a sense of optimistic renewal and restoration comes with Beethoven’s final string quartet. Unexpectedly light and uplifting in its overall tone, his pensive side is nonetheless also revealed. In the final movement, he writes cryptically the following motto: “Must it be? – It must be, it must be!”

Tickets are $70 for Level 1, $65 for Level 2, and $25 for students. Prices are inclusive of fees and taxes. Seating is assigned.

Single tickets go on sale on August 15, 2026.

Biography:

Celebrated for their "multifaceted artistry" and "brilliantly idiomatic" programming (New York Times), the Poiesis Quartet is the winner of the 2026 Cleveland Quartet Award and the First Prize and Commission Prize recipients of the 2025 Banff International String Quartet Competition. In 2023, they were also named the Grand Prize and Lift Every Voice Prize winners of the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition, as well as Gold Medal and BIPOC Prize winners at the 2023 St. Paul String Quartet Competition.

Derived from ancient Greek (ποιεῖν), the word Poiesis means “to make”; specifically, to create something that has never existed before. With a focus on expanding the string quartet repertoire with vibrant new works by emerging composers, the Poiesis Quartet infuses each performance with unique moments of synchronicity and verve. Their 2024 debut album, ‘as we are’ on the Bright Shiny Things label, which features world premiere recordings with mezzo-soprano Nancy Maultsby, was lauded for the quartet’s “bottomless depth” (Cleveland Classical). Their commission of String Quartet No. 7 ‘Surfacing’ by Chinese-Canadian composer Kevin Lau received its world premiere at the Chautauqua Institution in 2025. Furthermore, the Oberlin Commission Project (TOCP), an exciting new endeavor spearheaded by Poiesis, presents the world premieres of five newly commissioned works by LGBTQ+ composers of color from Oberlin Conservatory in March 2026.

Poiesis is honored to be selected as the 2025-26 Ernst Stiefl Quartet-in-Residence at the Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts, and as the 2025 St. Lawrence Emerging String Quartet in Residence at Stanford University. Poiesis has also completed multiple international residencies in Punta del Diablo and Punta del Este, Uruguay; the Emilia Romagna Festival in Italy; the Lunenburg Academy of Music Performance in Nova Scotia, CAN; the University of Victoria in British Columbia, CAN; and the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence in France.

The Poiesis Quartet is currently the Graduate Quartet-in-Residence at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM), studying under the Ariel Quartet. As graduates of Oberlin College & Conservatory, they were previously mentored by Sibbi Bernhardsson of the Pacifica Quartet and members of the Verona Quartet. As a multifaceted ensemble, in addition to their performance degrees from Oberlin, members of the quartet also received formal education in disciplines such as chemistry, comparative American studies, feminist studies, baroque music, and jazz. When not playing chamber music, Poiesis loves learning new languages, sharing ice cream cakes, and taking long walks on the beach.

FEATURING
Katherine Dowling, piano
James Kahane, conductor

Dance, imagination, and elemental power shape a program that moves between serenity and intensity, tradition and innovation. Copland’s Appalachian Spring offers a luminous vision of open space and quiet hope, while Alice Ho’s Strange Luminescence, inspired by the starry, swirling skies of Van Gogh’s Starry Night, is performed by pianist Katherine Dowling in a work of shimmering colour and atmosphere. Bartók’s The Miraculous Mandarin Suite drives the program to a gripping, visceral close with music of relentless energy and dramatic force. Together, the program traces dance as a universal human impulse, from stillness to motion, light to shadow, leaving the listener immersed in a vivid, ever-changing musical journey.

Programme

Copland, Appalachian Spring, Suite for 13 Instruments
Ho, Strange Luminescence

Fantasy

Acclaimed Ukrainian pianist and Honens laureate Illia Ovcharenko returns to the Cecilian Chamber Series to unveil a Fantasy-inspired program showcasing Liszt's epic Dante Sonata.

In the words of Illia himself:
I have constructed this program to focus on the musical concept of Fantasy. It is fascinating to hear the variety in their approaches from composers of different eras. Beethoven used the form to challenge Classical rules, while Schumann poured his most intense, personal emotions into his work. Kosenko presents a voice of profound lyrical poetry from my cultural home, Ukraine. Finally, the program culminates in Liszt’s dramatic Dante Sonata. This recital is all about that shared, total freedom of imagination.

In music, the term “fantasy” originated in the 16th century and from the outset was rooted in improvisation. The spontaneous spirit of the Fantasy has remained across the centuries - it is music ‘for the moment’, brought alive by Illia Ovcharenko’s personal musical voice.

Tickets are $70 for Level 1, $65 for Level 2, and $25 for students. Prices are inclusive of fees and taxes. Seating is assigned.

Single tickets go on sale on August 15, 2026.

He has appeared as a soloist with orchestras including the Orchestre National d’Île de France, the Orchestra of La Monnaie, the Toronto Symphony, Calgary Philharmonic, and the Jerusalem and Haifa Symphony Orchestras, in recital at venues and Festivals including Carnegie Hall, the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, Sendesaal in Hannover, Robert Schumann-Saal in Düsseldorf, Salle Bourgie and Domaine Forget, as well as Bravo! Vail, the Gstaad Menuhin Festival, and the Dresden International Festival.

In 2024-25, Illia made his debuts with the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, Israel Philharmonic, I Pommeriggi Musicali, Edmonton Symphony, and San Antonio Philharmonic, while recitals included the Konzerthaus Berlin, the ‘Folle Journee’ Warsaw, the Kissinger Olymp, Dubai Opera, Salle Cortot, Music Toronto, and Shenandoah University. 2025-26 sees his return to the Orchestre national d'Île-de-France, and debuts with the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra, Polish National Radio Symphony Katowice, Duisburger Philharmoniker, Symphony Nova Scotia, as well as appearances with the Kyiv Symphony Orchestra and a tour with the Youth Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine. The season also includes Illia’s Wigmore Hall recital debut.

Illia’s debut recording ‘Litany’ was released in December 2025 to great critical acclaim, including a 5-diapason review from Diapason Magazine. Two further releases are scheduled for 2025-26: a second recital album ‘Whispers and Thunder’ on the Steinway label (September 2025) and a concerto album on Pentatone featuring the left-hand concertos by Bortkiewicz, Ravel, and Prokofiev, with the MDR Symphonieorchester and Oksana Lyniv (April 2026).

Born in Ukraine, in a non-musical family to a computer engineer mother and an athlete and coach father, Illia Ovcharenko discovered the unattended upright piano sitting in a corner of his house at a tender age. At the age of six, he was taken to a performance of Tchaikovsky’s first piano concerto; after the concert, Illia told his mother he wanted to be a pianist when he grew up, and began his formal musical tuition. Success rapidly followed, and he made his concert debut at the National Philharmonic Hall of Ukraine at the age of 12 before moving to Kyiv to attend the Kyiv Lysenko State Music Lyceum for gifted children. He then studied in Israel with Arie Vardi at the Buchmann-Mehta School of Music in Tel Aviv and is currently pursuing a Master's degree at the Hochschule für Musik, Theater und Medien Hannover.

He is a recipient of the CAG Louis and Susan Meisel Prize.

Highlights of Johnson’s 2026-2027 season include recital appearances at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall, Spivey Hall, Merkin Hall, and Wheaton College, a return engagement with the Montréal Symphony Orchestra, and debuts with the Omaha Symphony and Toronto Symphony Orchestra. Alongside the standard concert repertoire, he maintains a strong interest in experimental and interdisciplinary programming; the 2026-2027 season includes his debuts in live improvisation and solo harpsichord.

Beethoven and Schumann Masterpieces

The Viano Quartet is one of the leading new-generation string quartets of North America, their performances being described by Gramophone magazine as “invigoratingly fresh-minted…slick, soulful, strong, glowing, and supremely virtuosic.” Their return to Regina is much anticipated.

The program opens with a newly written string quartet by Indian-American composer Reena Esmail. Fresh off the press and commissioned by the Viano Quartet, Reena’s music weaves together the traditions of Hindustani and Western classical music. Going back in time to commissions of former days, it was Count Razumovsky, Russian ambassador to Vienna, who asked Beethoven to write his three String Quartets Op. 59, completed in 1806. In this first quartet of the set, eager optimism pours forth from the very beginning. Heartbreaking and timeless moments are heard in the slow movement, and a Russian folk song is incorporated into the final movement at the Count's request, with full Beethoven charm and abandon.

Robert Schumann was a great admirer of Beethoven – the year 1842, known as Schumann’s “chamber music year,” was spent vigorously studying the quartets of Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven in preparation for his own chamber music offerings. His Piano Quintet was miraculously drafted in only five days and was dedicated to his wife, Clara. She loved the work, describing it as “full of strength and freshness,” and performed it regularly throughout her own great career as a pianist.

Viano Quartet

Praised for their “virtuosity, visceral expression, and rare unity of intention” (Boston Globe), the Viano Quartet has quickly soared to international acclaim as one of the most dynamic and in-demand string quartets of their generation. The Viano Quartet are Bowers Program Artists at The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center from 2024-2027.

The Viano Quartet has collaborated with many of the world’s finest artists, including Emanuel Ax, Inon Barnatan, Fleur Barron, Mahan Esfahani, Marc-André Hamelin, James Ehnes, Bridget Kibbey, Paul Neubauer, David Shifrin, and Pinchas Zukerman. Their past 2025/2026 season featured exciting collaborations with artists including mandolinist Avi Avital, pianists Sir Stephen Hough and Gilbert Kalish, clarinetist Anthony McGill, guitarist Miloš Karadaglić, and singer-songwriter Vienna Teng.

Equally committed to both beloved masterworks and contemporary repertoire, the Viano Quartet actively collaborates with today’s leading composers, including Sir Stephen Hough, Kevin Lau, Chris Rogerson, and Caroline Shaw.

The Viano Quartet was formed in Los Angeles at the Colburn Conservatory of Music in 2015. Each member of the quartet is grateful for the unwavering support from their mentors at the Curtis Institute and Colburn Conservatory, including members of the Dover, Guarneri, and Tokyo string quartets. The quartet performs on a matched set of instruments by Matteo Goffriller, generously provided by Canimex Inc. (Drummondville, Québec, Canada).

"Viano" is a portmanteau that symbolizes how the four individual instruments of a string quartet – each beginning with the letter "v" – work harmoniously as one, like a piano, creating a unified instrument called the "Viano."
